Fall Home Maintenance Tips

As the vibrant colors of autumn begin to blanket our region, it's also a signal that winter is just around the corner. Preparing your home for the colder months ahead is crucial to ensuring it remains safe, efficient, and comfortable. Here are some essential fall home maintenance tips for Ontario homeowners.

1. Inspect and Clean Gutters

Falling leaves can quickly clog your gutters, leading to water damage, ice dams, and even foundation issues. Before the snow arrives, make sure to clean out your gutters and downspouts. Check for any leaks or damage, and ensure that water is being directed away from your home’s foundation. Most water damage, leaks and basement floods that I see could have been completely avoided by proper eavestroughs.

2. Check the Roof

Your roof is your first line of defense against harsh Canadian winters. Inspect it for any missing or damaged shingles, leaks, or signs of wear. Consider having a professional roofing contractor assess it if you’re unsure. (I can refer you to some great local roofing companies!) Addressing small issues now can prevent costly repairs later.

3. Seal Drafts and Insulate

A drafty home can lead to higher heating costs and a less comfortable living space. Check windows, doors, and any other openings for drafts and seal them with weatherstripping or caulking. Consider adding insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces to improve energy efficiency.

4. Service the Furnace

Before the cold sets in, have your furnace serviced by a professional to ensure it’s running efficiently. Replace or clean the filters, and check for any issues that might prevent it from keeping your home warm. If you have a fireplace, have it cleaned and inspected as well.

5. Prepare Outdoor Areas

Bring in or cover outdoor furniture, and drain hoses and shut off exterior faucets to prevent pipes from freezing. It’s also a good time to prune trees and bushes away from the house, as ice and snow can cause branches to break and damage your home.

6. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

As you start using your heating system, the risk of fire or carbon monoxide leaks increases. Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home, and replace the batteries if needed. This simple step can save lives.

7. Stock Up on Winter Essentials

Finally, fall is the perfect time to prepare for winter storms. Stock up on essentials like snow shovels, salt, sand, and ensure that your snowblower is in good working order. It’s also wise to check your emergency supplies, including flashlights, batteries, and first-aid kits.

Fall home maintenance is about more than just preparing for the beauty of winter—it's about protecting your investment and ensuring your home remains safe and efficient through the colder months. By taking these proactive steps, Canadian homeowners can enjoy a warm, worry-free winter season.
